A full moon rises behind light cloud cover casting a ghostly glow beyond fractured, and toppled tufa formations. These tufa formations were created thousands of years ago from discharging springs at the bottom of ancient Lake Lahontan, located in what would later be named, North America. What this place must have looked like to the native peoples from hundreds and thousands of years ago when they viewed these lands. Imagining the night skies not impacted by light pollution from modern cities, and the beaming stars and moonlight illuminating this ancient landscape, it is truly fascinating! Captured January 2015, this is a single exposure. © MIKE CLASEN PHOTOGRAPHY www.mikeclasenphotography.com

Snow blows sideways, late November 2015, in an area of eroded sandstone formations. After hiking halfway up to where the “good stuff” was, with some friends from my photography class, the snow had arrived. Flurries at first, then the wind kept gaining velocity the higher up we hiked, until the snow was moving sideways on us. This was the only place I was able to capture a shot with my DSLR, we were somewhat sheltered in this location at the top of the mountain, and not directly in the elements, but snow was still blowing all over the place, I had to wipe off the UV filter quite a few times when firing off the shutter. Usually, this is where the fun starts, but it was pretty much a white out up here. Although we were dressed for the occasion, we all were drenched from the snow by the time we hiked back down to the trucks. We were all glad we made the trip! Yes, I left the rain gear in my friends truck… ;-) © MIKE CLASEN PHOTOGRAPHY www.mikeclasenphotography.com
